Stairs 2: Stair Harder

So I’ve been doing more work on stairs and dungeon floors and whatnot! now I can plan out dungeon floors and specify how many stairs leading up/down a floor has, and where they lead to. This was a little tricky to get right especially for dungeons with “looping” paths eg:

Being able to step onto a floor you’ve been to before, but via path you haven’t traveled was quite a challenge for generation (since floors are generated when you step onto them). But I got it working!

It’s probably not apparent in the gif, but that’s what is happening – I’m stepping to a floor I’ve been to before (which is why it spawns the dimmed map tiles, to show I have knowledge of seeing them before) and to get there I am travelling through a floor that is new to me.

wow that’s probably way more detail than anyone wants to hear about the development maybe? It seems pretty complex and it’s definitely been a hassle to get working, but to play through this stuff it’s super simple and just makes sense. Which is neat but at the same time… I like when people can notice that my code must have been tough to write πŸ˜›

edit: Oh I totally forgot to mention I tweaked all the generation so it runs from seeds! Even tho each dungeon floor is generated when you step on it, its seeds are set at the start. So generation doesn’t have to be random, you could try to beat the same dungeon several times if you want, or share a dungeon you like with buddies πŸ˜€

DANGEROUS DUELS

Hey there! If you’ve been following me for a while you probably know about a game I released quite a while ago as “BANG BANG BANG!”, and if you have been following me recently you probably know that I’ve had to change the name due to a trademark conflict. The game is now called “DANGEROUS DUELS”

Because of the uh… legal necessity of me updating the game with it’s new name, making a new trailer, updating store pages etc, this means that the belated monthly build for December is going to be even more belated… But by way of apology, if you are a $5+ patron you can use this link right here to get the game on itch.io <3

Anyway a couple of words about the trademark conflict since it’s easy to assume the worst in these situations (I know I did at first):

  • Β The trademark claim by the other party was absolutely legitimate, it predated my own use by years, was presented in a remarkably similar way, and was for a game with very similar themeing to my own.
  • Also, I was never especially attached to the old name anyway, I’m glad for the change if anything.

So provided nobody tries to shake me down for money I don’t have (which is looking unlikely I think) then all is well! Apart from, you know, having to spend a bunch of time updating things and taking time away from my other projects.

Hey everyone, happy new year! Just a few notices so that I’ve got them here for you and not just mixed in with my messy twitter feed:

  • Have you checked out meditations.games yet? Every day this year it will deliver you a new small game (like, 5 minutes long max) that you can only play on that day. It’s a really cool project!
  • December’s monthly build is going to be early this month, sorry it’s late but I was super focused on my dice thing and didn’t want to stop work on it for something else πŸ™‚
  • Yes, that means two WIP builds this month
  • This year is probably going to be mostly about RPG stuff I think, that means my dice thing, getting back to my tabletop roguelike, and maybe a few other dicey/faux-tabletop things.
  • I will work on other stuff too, I’ll keep intermittently doing There Shall Be Lancing stuff as usual, maybe Dusk Child 2 and Dead End too

Maps! (They don’t love you like I love you!)

So uh, today I’m working on map generation! I’ve got this new “tile style” type system that I’m putting through it’s paces so tiles can be brick/stone or whatever, the generator can specify that and the “DM” picks the appropriate tile pieces and puts them on the board.

Also I’ve got each new generated dungeon floor’s dimensions being random, that threw up a few bugs of course but they’re all fixed now. Next thing I want to do is making a kind of “generation guide” system, so for each floor I can specify what generator to use & what floors it will connect to. From there I can start work on a map generator that is a bit more clever and doesn’t ever spawn monsters on staircase tiles blocking off an entire floor (that happens sometimes rn D:)

Sorry if I’m updating this patreon too often now? but it’s just how I am, I work LOADS in bursts and then have a week or so where I can’t do anything and hide from everyone, so you’ll get a break before long anyway. I hope that’s OK!

Dice!

Update: The filesize is way better! Also there are sound effects, better lighting, I’ve included the custom face settings that I wanted – overall it’s a much better and more interesting build!

Hey, happy holidays! Here’s a thing for you!

Video above describes it, it’s not got everything ready that I wanted ready for you, and some of the more unusual dice haven’t had their collision meshes tested for fairness yet, but it is totally usable!

Sorry about the filesizes though, I wanted the dice to look nice (nice dicey dice nice dice nice haha) so the textures are huge… in future versions I’ll probably try something else since I want this to work on mobile too πŸ™‚
