DANGEROUS DUELS

Hey there! If you’ve been following me for a while you probably know about a game I released quite a while ago as “BANG BANG BANG!”, and if you have been following me recently you probably know that I’ve had to change the name due to a trademark conflict. The game is now called “DANGEROUS DUELS”

Because of the uh… legal necessity of me updating the game with it’s new name, making a new trailer, updating store pages etc, this means that the belated monthly build for December is going to be even more belated… But by way of apology, if you are a $5+ patron you can use this link right here to get the game on itch.io <3

Anyway a couple of words about the trademark conflict since it’s easy to assume the worst in these situations (I know I did at first):

  • Β The trademark claim by the other party was absolutely legitimate, it predated my own use by years, was presented in a remarkably similar way, and was for a game with very similar themeing to my own.
  • Also, I was never especially attached to the old name anyway, I’m glad for the change if anything.

So provided nobody tries to shake me down for money I don’t have (which is looking unlikely I think) then all is well! Apart from, you know, having to spend a bunch of time updating things and taking time away from my other projects.

Anyway, that’s all for now, I hope you’re all well! <3

Stairs 2: Stair Harder

So I’ve been doing more work on stairs and dungeon floors and whatnot! now I can plan out dungeon floors and specify how many stairs leading up/down a floor has, and where they lead to. This was a little tricky to get right especially for dungeons with “looping” paths eg:

Being able to step onto a floor you’ve been to before, but via path you haven’t traveled was quite a challenge for generation (since floors are generated when you step onto them). But I got it working!

It’s probably not apparent in the gif, but that’s what is happening – I’m stepping to a floor I’ve been to before (which is why it spawns the dimmed map tiles, to show I have knowledge of seeing them before) and to get there I am travelling through a floor that is new to me.

wow that’s probably way more detail than anyone wants to hear about the development maybe? It seems pretty complex and it’s definitely been a hassle to get working, but to play through this stuff it’s super simple and just makes sense. Which is neat but at the same time… I like when people can notice that my code must have been tough to write πŸ˜›

anyway I just checked and it seems you have all helped me get this patreon thingy to $250 a month and I wanna say thanks so

there, you can have a badly drawn Eachy cheering “Thank You!” <3

Seriously tho thank you so much, your patronage really helps me greatly. *sends infinite e-hugs*

edit: Oh I totally forgot to mention I tweaked all the generation so it runs from seeds! Even tho each dungeon floor is generated when you step on it, its seeds are set at the start. So generation doesn’t have to be random, you could try to beat the same dungeon several times if you want, or share a dungeon you like with buddies πŸ˜€

New Gamebook Character Classes

Hey so if you want to play Assault on the Frozen Fortress or The Necromancer’s Tower as something other than a Rogue, Warrior, or Mage – here is a .PDF with a bunch more classes!

They haven’t been tested yet but I figured I’d share them with you because I think they are fun πŸ™‚

I’m still working on gamebook stuff (I released a Writing Fantasy update just yesterday!), and planning how I’ll make a gamebook generator (because writing them one-by-one is a whole lot of work!) but if I’m honest… I’m looking to wrap this stuff up sooner rather than later, as I’d like to begin work on a BIG RPG project. But I need a little time to get into the right headspace, hence more gamebook stuff first πŸ™‚

I’m finshed with Sophie’s Dice!

Yesterday I finished releasing Sophie’s Dice v1.2 (>>> Patron Link <<<) and I feel like I am at the point where I am actually calling it done. I have no plans to work on it again unless stores require busywork or there is a serious bug or something.

So I wanted to take a moment to just say THANK YOU SO MUCH for supporting me whilst I was working on this!

When I started doing Dice things this was specifically a “Videogames” patreon, most of you didn’t sign up to help me out on this ABSURD project, but you stuck with me until I got it out of my system and I am so incredibly grateful to all of you, I want you to know I really appreciate it! Your support has meant so much!

So, whilst I was working on this I lost count of the times I said to you all “I just need to get it done, then I’ll get back to making videogames!”

Well it is done, I’m going to get back to making videogames!

Specifically, I’m going to move on to a BIG game project, which I’ll talk about in a post soon – and I am SO EXCITED to get started and share it with you!

Again though, thank you so much for your support, I wouldn’t have been able to make such a silly thing so seriously without your help <3

Monthly Build 2020/01 – Phantasmal

OK so here is one from a LONG time ago, I had completely forgotten about this project until yesterday when I was digging through old projects looking for something to share, and that is kind of heart-breaking in a way!

I go into more detail in the video (too much detail probably) but this project represented the first time I really tried to make a dream game, the kind of thing I had infinite passion for, and then abandoned because material reality got in the way. It’s kind of frustrating to know that if I had the kind of support I have with this patreon back then – this would have been a finished project by now. But I had to abandon this, and many other “dream game” projects while I was looking for something that could just cover the cost of rent and food.

Something I’ve been thinking about lately is how much the mindset I developed after things like this (make small stuff! stuff that is quick to make and get to market!) has been so ingrained into me at this point that I haven’t realised that after all this time with your support, I could have been working on one of my DREAM projects! Hell it’s been almost three years here now, maybe four? An amazing awesome project I love could have been finished by now!

Anyway that’s why this is the monthly build right now, a reminder of the ambition I used to have, that I want to have again. Because the next thing I am making is going to be awesome and magnificent and ambitious and magical and I’m not gonna be afraid to make it anymore! And the reason why is because you have been supporting me through even the most absurd dicey nonsense, I’m gonna stop fucking around and make something amazing!

Anyway, here’s a bunch of concept art for this old project, with download links below (they are so tiny patreon doesn’t mind them as attachments! I love old versions of unity!)
